Is this a wake up call? We barely make money if at all.

I can clearly see myself in the majority of developers who doesn't recoup investment dollars in developing or maintaining my iOS apps. Are you one of those too?

I don't think it's so much a wake up call as it is an emphasis on the role that marketing and promotion has on the success of an independent developer's apps.
After all, if nobody knows your apps exist, then it'll be next to impossible to sell them.

I think the main takeaway here is to find alternative means of showcasing your iPhone apps, without having to resort to forking out the $30,000 for a marketing budget!
